Job Overview
Newport City Council is seeking a Gateway Assessment Worker to support the Housing Support Team.
The role will involve undertaking housing-related support need and risk assessments, delivering short-term housing-related support interventions, and acting as a source of information and advice to colleagues within Housing teams.
The postholder will support the Council's wider objective of preventing homelessness and helping homelessness to be rare, brief and unrepeated. This will include assessing support needs, preparing client-centred support plans, maintaining accurate case notes, signposting to specialist services and liaising with internal teams, external agencies and support providers.
This role requires experience working with vulnerable groups, knowledge of housing needs, housing support processes, social and private housing sectors, support planning and good case management skills.

This is a Gateway Assessment Worker / Housing Support Assessment role.
Candidates must have experience working with and supporting vulnerable groups of people.
The role requires experience carrying out housing-related support assessments, risk assessments or similar needs assessments, as well as preparing clear support plans and accurate case notes.
Candidates should understand housing needs, social housing, private housing and housing support planning processes.
Candidates must be confident working with people who may be homeless, at risk of homelessness or experiencing difficult and complex situations.
A current full UK driving licence is required, as the role may involve undertaking site visits across Newport.
A Standard DBS is required for this post.
Candidates without housing support, homelessness prevention, vulnerable customer support, needs assessment, risk assessment, support planning or similar experience are unlikely to be considered.
Key Responsibilities
- Undertake housing-related support need assessments
- Complete risk assessments
- Capture relevant information from a wide range of sources
- Gather information from statutory and non-statutory stakeholders
- Prepare and implement client-centred support plans
- Work with service users to deliver accurate case notes
- Maintain accurate and detailed case records
- Provide short-term and early intervention housing support
- Act as a point of contact for housing support matters
- Respond to enquiries within the Housing Advice and Prevention Team
- Support individuals or households who are homeless
- Support individuals or households at risk of homelessness
- Support people experiencing financial difficulties
- Submit support applications to the Newport Supported Housing and Floating Support Gateway
- Support projects where a commissioned support provider service may be failing or changing
- Support service users when support is being decommissioned, remodelled or transferred
- Deliver effective signposting to specialist advice and support services
- Liaise with Housing Advice and Prevention colleagues
- Work proactively to support service users to access relevant housing services
- Maintain knowledge of housing support legislation, regulations and guidance
- Understand legal rights and responsibilities under tenancy legislation
- Work flexibly at locations across the city
- Undertake home and community visits where required
- Co-work effectively with statutory agencies, council departments and voluntary organisations
- Contribute to positive outcomes for vulnerable people
- Maintain a directory of services relevant to housing support
- Carry out duties in line with Council policies and procedures
- Work in line with safeguarding, confidentiality, data protection and customer care requirements
