Job Overview
Barnet Council is seeking a Planning Officer Level 2 to support the Planning and Building Control service within Development Management.
The role will contribute to the delivery of planning services in line with the Council's aims, objectives, priorities, quality standards and performance expectations.
This is a generic Planning Officer role within the planning service. The service operates a rotation programme, giving officers the opportunity to work across different planning specialisms.
The successful candidate will be expected to lead on general areas of planning work and support the delivery of effective, customer-focused and cost-effective planning services.

This is a Planning Officer Level 2 role within Development Management.
Candidates must have relevant planning experience and be able to contribute positively to a busy Planning and Building Control service.
The role is hybrid, but office attendance is required on fixed days each week, currently Tuesday and Wednesday.
There may also be occasions where the postholder is expected to travel outside of the Borough to deliver services on behalf of Barnet.
A driving licence is required.
Candidates without planning, development management, local authority planning or related experience are unlikely to be considered.
Key Responsibilities
- Contribute positively to the Planning and Building Control service

- Work with internal colleagues and external stakeholders
- Attend the office on fixed days each week
- Travel outside the Borough when required to deliver services on behalf of Barnet
- Undertake duties aligned with the Planning Officer role and grade
Essential Experience & Skills
- Planning experience
- Development Management experience
- Local authority planning experience
- Knowledge of planning processes and procedures
- Ability to manage planning work to agreed standards
- Ability to contribute to Planning and Building Control service objectives
- Ability to work across general planning areas
- Strong written communication skills
- Strong verbal communication skills
- Ability to work with internal and external stakeholders
- Ability to work to deadlines and performance standards
- Good organisational skills
- Good IT skills
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team
- Ability to work hybrid with fixed office attendance
- Willingness to travel outside the Borough where required
- Driving licence
Desirable
- Previous Planning Officer experience within a local authority
- Barnet or London borough planning experience
- Experience handling planning applications or development management caseloads
- Experience providing planning advice
- Experience working across different planning specialisms
- Knowledge of Planning and Building Control service delivery
- RTPI membership or planning qualification
Additional Information
This is a hybrid role with office attendance required every Tuesday and Wednesday.
