Service Area: Community & Place / Commercial & Operations / Grounds and Cleansing

Hours: 37 hours per week

Working Pattern: Monday to Friday

There may be a requirement to work 43 hours per week from March to October, with the additional 6 hours accumulated as flexi time to be taken back between November and March.

Pay

PAYE Rate: £13.26 per hour

Job Overview

Monmouthshire County Council is seeking Grounds Operatives to support the Grounds and Cleansing section within Commercial & Operations.

The role will involve maintaining public open spaces, verges, planting areas, schools and contracted sites to provide a clean, safe and sustainable environment. Duties will include grass cutting using hand-held and ride-on equipment, maintaining shrub beds and annual bedding, sports facility maintenance, landscaping, arboricultural work, litter picking, emptying litter bins and responding to fly-tipping service requests.

The successful candidate must hold a current clean UK full driving licence and have experience in grounds maintenance or a similar outdoor manual environment.

This is a hands-on outdoor grounds maintenance role.

You must hold a current clean UK full driving licence and have experience in grounds maintenance activities or a similar environment.

You must be comfortable working outdoors, using grounds maintenance equipment, following health and safety procedures, working without close supervision and being flexible to support work outside core hours, including bank holidays and emergencies when required.

Candidates without a clean UK driving licence and relevant grounds maintenance experience are unlikely to be considered.

Key Responsibilities

  • Carry out grounds maintenance across public open spaces, verges, schools and contracted sites
  • Undertake grass cutting using hand-held and ride-on equipment
  • Maintain shrub beds, planting areas and annual bedding
  • Mark and maintain sports facilities
  • Undertake landscaping of open spaces
  • Carry out arboricultural work where trained
  • Empty litter bins and carry out litter picking
  • Respond to fly-tipping service requests and follow evidence collation processes
  • Support street services duties when required
  • Keep vehicles clean and complete daily safety inspections
  • Use plant and machinery safely in line with manufacturer instructions
  • Follow health and safety legislation, policies and codes of practice
  • Work effectively as part of a team
  • Work independently without close supervision when required
  • Maintain polite and positive interactions with the public
  • Undertake training required to carry out duties safely and effectively
  • Support emergency responses such as flooding, snow clearance or storm-related works when instructed

Essential Experience & Skills

  • Current clean UK full driving licence
  • Experience in grounds maintenance activities or a similar outdoor manual environment
  • Ability to follow council policies and procedures

  • Ability to tow up to 3.5 tonnes

  • Experience using strimmers, blowers, hedge cutters or similar grounds equipment
  • Previous local authority grounds maintenance or cleansing experience
  • Experience with litter picking, fly-tipping response or street services duties
