Job Overview
Carmarthenshire County Council is seeking Refuse / Recycling Drivers to support the Waste Operations service.
The role will involve safely and efficiently driving refuse and recycling collection vehicles ranging from 7.5 tonne to 27 tonne, supporting the collection service for residents and businesses across Carmarthenshire.
Candidates must hold a minimum Category C / Class 2 large goods vehicle licence and be confident driving refuse or recycling vehicles, carrying out daily vehicle checks, using in-cab technology, following collection routes and supervising loaders assigned to the crew.

This is a Refuse / Recycling Driver role requiring a minimum Category C / Class 2 licence.
Candidates must be confident driving refuse/recycling collection vehicles, supervising crew members, following safe systems of work and operating within health and safety requirements.
The role involves route navigation, daily defect checks, tachograph use, in-cab technology, disposal site procedures, communication with loaders and members of the public, and assisting the crew with loading where required.
No DBS check is required for this role.
Candidates without a valid Category C / Class 2 licence or refuse/recycling driving experience are unlikely to be suitable.
Key Responsibilities
- Drive allocated refuse and recycling collection vehicles safely
- Operate vehicles ranging from 7.5 tonne to 27 tonne
- Carry out daily vehicle checks and routine maintenance
- Report vehicle defects to supervisors verbally or using in-cab technology
- Ensure road safety requirements are followed at all times
- Supervise, direct and support refuse/recycling loaders assigned to the crew
- Provide instruction and guidance to the crew during collection activities
- Oversee collection round activities and resolve operational issues
- Manage issues such as parked vehicles, obstructions, communal collection points and illicit tipping
- Assist the crew with loading refuse/recycling containers where required
- Navigate collection routes effectively
- Use in-cab data and electronic technology for route management
- Use tachograph functions correctly
- Record and report route or operational issues
- Comply with safe disposal site rules for unloading and weighing
- Tip off at transfer stations, landfill sites or recycling facilities as directed
- Use initiative to resolve operational problems safely
- Report decisions and activity to the Environmental Supervisor
- Engage with the public to promote recycling messages and improve participation
- Support other crews where required
- Support efficient delivery and completion of waste and recycling collection rounds
- Follow risk management principles, safe systems of work and service procedures
- Wear required PPE and ensure crew members comply with PPE requirements
- Complete paperwork and maintain accurate records, including timesheets, work schedules and accident reports
Essential Experience & Skills
- Minimum Category C / Class 2 large goods vehicle licence

- Experience operating power mechanisms or refuse/recycling vehicle equipment

- Awareness of customer care standards
- Awareness of council policies and procedures linked to staff supervision
- Welsh language skills
