Job Overview
West Lancashire Borough Council is seeking 2 District Caretakers to join the District Caretaking service within Facilities Services.
The role will involve carrying out manual operational duties across the local area, helping to maintain clean, safe and well-presented estates, communal areas and external spaces.
The successful candidates will use a range of handheld plant and equipment, including weed sprayers, strimmers, hedge trimmers, blowers and jet washes. Candidates must also have a clear understanding of basic DIY, be able to follow instructions to a high standard, and be committed to health and safety procedures.

This is a hands-on manual role requiring experience in an operational, caretaking, grounds, estates, facilities or maintenance environment.
You must be comfortable using handheld plant and outdoor equipment, carrying out basic DIY tasks, and working to health and safety procedures.
A full driving licence is desirable.
Key Responsibilities
- Carry out district caretaking duties across the local area
- Use handheld plant and equipment safely
- Operate weed sprayers, strimmers, hedge trimmers, blowers and jet washes
- Carry out basic DIY and minor maintenance tasks
- Maintain communal areas, external spaces and estate environments
- Complete manual operational tasks as directed
- Work as part of the District Caretaking / Facilities Services team
- Ensure work is completed to a high standard
- Follow health and safety policies and procedures
- Report defects, hazards or issues as required
- Support the delivery of a clean, safe and well-maintained local environment
Essential Experience & Skills
- Experience working in a manual operational service
- Experience using handheld plant, tools or outdoor equipment
- Clear understanding of basic DIY
- Ability to undertake tasks as directed
- Ability to complete work to a high standard
- Strong commitment to health and safety
- Ability to follow policies and procedures
- Practical, reliable and hands-on approach
- Ability to work as part of a team
- Good timekeeping and work ethic
Desirable
- Full driving licence
- Previous caretaking, grounds maintenance, facilities, estates or building maintenance experience
- Experience using strimmers, hedge trimmers, blowers, jet washers or weed sprayers
