Service Area: South Wales Trunk Road Agency

Hours: 37 hours per week

Working Pattern:
Monday to Thursday: 8 hours per day
Friday: 7.5 hours per day
Includes daily 30-minute lunch break.

Possible additional night and weekend work depending on operational needs, skills and experience.

Start Date: 06 July 2026
Duration: 12 weeks
Contract Period: Initial contract to the end of September, with any further extension subject to operational requirements.

Pay

PAYE Rate: £12.85 per hour

Job Overview

Neath Port Talbot Council is seeking 2 Grass Cutters / Grounds Labourers to support seasonal grounds maintenance work on the high-speed road network.

The role will involve labouring duties, mainly grass cutting, mowing and weed spraying, within protected traffic-managed sites. Candidates will be working in operational highway environments and must follow all safety instructions, site rules, PPE requirements and traffic management procedures.

Adequate training and PPE will be provided for the use of equipment, expected behaviours and working safely within traffic management protected sites.

A driving licence is required, as successful candidates will be expected to work out of multiple operational depots.

This is a hands-on outdoor labouring and grass cutting role on the high-speed road network.

You must be comfortable working within protected traffic-managed sites, using grass cutting / mowing equipment, carrying out weed spraying duties, wearing PPE and following strict health and safety procedures.

A driving licence is required due to the need to work from multiple operational depots.

Candidates who do not hold a driving licence or are not comfortable working near traffic-managed highway environments are unlikely to be suitable.

Key Responsibilities

  • Carry out grass cutting and mowing duties
  • Undertake weed spraying where required
  • Carry out general labouring duties on highway and trunk road sites
  • Work safely within protected traffic-managed areas
  • Use grounds maintenance tools and equipment safely
  • Follow training, instructions and site safety procedures
  • Wear and use PPE correctly at all times
  • Support operational teams across different depots
  • Maintain safe working practices for yourself and others
  • Work outdoors in varying weather conditions
  • Support additional night or weekend work where required
  • Follow instructions from supervisors and operational managers
  • Maintain good timekeeping and reliability throughout the contract

Essential Experience & Skills

  • Driving licence
  • Experience in grass cutting, mowing, grounds maintenance, landscaping, labouring or similar outdoor manual work
  • Comfortable working outdoors in different weather conditions
  • Ability to work safely in traffic-managed or highway environments
  • Able to follow health and safety instructions
  • Willingness to use PPE and follow site rules
  • Reliable and punctual
  • Good practical/manual work ethic
  • Able to work as part of a team
  • Able to travel to / work from the required operational depots
  • Willingness to undertake training provided by TRS
  • Flexible approach to possible night and weekend work

Desirable

  • Previous highway, trunk road or traffic-managed site experience
  • Experience using strimmers, mowers or grounds maintenance equipment
  • Weed spraying experience
  • PA1 / PA6 spraying qualification, if held
  • Previous local authority or grounds maintenance contractor experience
  • Experience working near live road networks or protected roadwork sites

Additional Information

Training and PPE will be provided.

Interviews are expected to be held on-site, and candidates will be reviewed according to suitability.
