Working Pattern:
Monday to Thursday: 7:30am to 3:30pm
Friday: 7:30am to 3:00pm

Rostered shift pattern may include weekends, bank holidays and extra-statutory days.

Job Overview

Newport City Council is seeking 6 Driver / General Operatives to support the Street Cleansing service.

The role will involve carrying out contractual street cleansing duties, completing daily cleansing tasks in line with route schedules and, when operationally required, driving Council vehicles.

This is a practical outdoor role requiring a full UK driving licence, good knowledge of the Newport City area, the ability to work in all weather conditions and the stamina to undertake considerable walking, bending, lifting and carrying duties.

This is a Driver / General Operative street cleansing role.

Candidates must hold a current full UK driving licence.

The role involves outdoor cleansing duties, walking, bending, lifting, carrying and working in all weather conditions.

Candidates must be able to work to daily route schedules, follow health and safety procedures, wear uniform and PPE, and work as part of a team.

Experience in refuse, cleansing, waste management or street cleansing is desirable but not essential.

Candidates without a full UK driving licence or willingness to carry out physical outdoor cleansing duties are unlikely to be considered.

Key Responsibilities

  • Carry out day-to-day street cleansing tasks
  • Complete cleansing duties in line with contract specification
  • Follow daily route schedules
  • Drive Council vehicles when operationally required
  • Comply with instructions in the Council Driver Handbook
  • Wear Council uniform, protective clothing and footwear
  • Follow health and safety regulations at all times
  • Take reasonable care of own safety and the safety of others
  • Report incidents, accidents, faults and hazards
  • Attend training courses when instructed
  • Undertake driving and cleansing duties as directed by managers or supervisors
  • Work with supervisors, client officers, cleansing operatives and members of the public
  • Supervise cleansing operatives when working together where required
  • Work outdoors in all weather conditions
  • Carry out walking, bending, lifting and carrying duties
  • Work to targets and deadlines
  • Provide good customer care when dealing with the public

Essential Experience & Skills

  • Current full UK driving licence
  • Knowledge of the Newport City area
