Job Overview

Carmarthenshire County Council is seeking a Refuse / Recycling Driver to support current refuse and recycling collection rounds.

The role will involve the safe, efficient and reliable driving of refuse and recycling collection vehicles to meet the needs of residents and businesses across Carmarthenshire.

The successful candidate will be responsible for driving allocated collection vehicles, completing daily vehicle checks, reporting defects, supervising refuse/recycling loaders, using in-cab technology, following collection routes, supporting safe tipping and disposal procedures, and assisting with loading duties where required.

This role requires a minimum Category C large goods vehicle licence, strong road safety awareness, refuse/recycling collection experience or similar driving experience, ability to supervise a crew, and willingness to work outdoors in all weather conditions.

This is a Refuse / Recycling Driver role.

Candidates must hold a minimum large goods vehicle licence Category C.

The role involves driving refuse/recycling collection vehicles, supervising up to three refuse/recycling loaders, completing vehicle checks, using in-cab technology, following collection routes and ensuring safe working around members of the public.

Candidates must be able to work safely, follow instructions, communicate clearly with crew members, report vehicle defects, and support the team in completing refuse and recycling rounds.

The role may involve physical work, including assisting the crew with loading appropriate refuse/recycling containers where required.

No DBS check is required for this post.

Candidates without Category C licence, refuse/recycling driving, HGV driving, vehicle checks, crew supervision, route following or safe machinery/vehicle operation experience are unlikely to be considered.

Key Responsibilities

Drive allocated refuse/recycling collection vehicles
Carry out daily vehicle checks
Complete routine vehicle maintenance in line with procedures
Record checks in the daily defect inspection book
Report defects to the supervisor verbally or via in-cab technology
Undertake vehicle cleansing where required
Operate any power mechanism fitted to the vehicle safely
Drive safely and follow road safety requirements
Follow the Highway Code at all times
Maintain close communication with the refuse/recycling crew
Supervise and transport refuse/recycling loaders safely
Provide direct instruction and guidance to crew members
Oversee daily round activities
Resolve issues affecting refuse/recycling collections
Deal with parked vehicles, obstructions, communal collection points and illicit tipping issues
Help avoid missed collections
Reduce and control health and safety risks
Assist the crew with loading refuse/recycling containers where required
Use route navigation effectively
Use in-cab data and electronic technology correctly
Use tachograph functions correctly
Record and report route or operational problems
Follow safe disposal site rules when unloading and weighing
Tip off at transfer stations, landfill sites or recycling facilities as required
Use initiative to solve operational problems
Report decisions and activity to the Environmental Supervisor
Engage politely with the public where required
Promote recycling messages and improve participation in recycling schemes
Support other crews where required
Work dynamically to complete waste and recycling collection rounds
Support efficient route delivery
Work in line with safe systems of work
Follow the Code of Practice for Refuse and Recycling
Wear required PPE at all times
Complete paperwork and records clearly and accurately
Maintain timesheets, work schedules and accident reports where required

Essential Experience & Skills

Minimum Category C large goods vehicle licence
Experience driving large goods vehicles
Refuse/recycling collection experience or similar operational driving experience
Ability to complete daily vehicle checks
Ability to identify and report vehicle defects
Ability to use in-cab technology
Ability to use tachograph functions
Ability to read and follow maps or routes
Knowledge of relevant health and safety legislation
Awareness of safe systems of work
Ability to supervise refuse/recycling loaders
Ability to provide instruction and guidance to a crew
Ability to work safely around the public
Ability to communicate clearly with crew members and supervisors
Ability to use initiative and discretion to resolve operational issues
Ability to meet deadlines and complete collection rounds
